About SWAP

Learn why your customers should SWAP to Heat Pump Water Heating!

Heat Pump Water Heating (HPWH) is the most cost-effective and energy efficient water heating option available today. It is easy to install, reliable, eco-friendly and a profitable new product offering for your business.

(NZHWA) is focused on moving New Zealand toward energy efficient water heating technologies that are tailored to New Zealand’s climate and energy landscape. We have created a new Heat Pump Water Heating information module called SWAP: Sustainable Water- Heating Awareness for Plumbers.

SWAP Information Modules are now operated and delivered by the Master Plumbers. SWAP will give you more information about:

  • HPWH Technology
  • System Types
  • Installation Tips
  • Recommending the right system
  • Relevant Standards

System Types

There are two main types of air source Heat Pump Water Heating systems: Integrated and Split. Integrated systems have the heat pump module or heat exchanger either bolted on or fully integrated with the storage cylinder. Split systems separate the heat pump module from the storage cylinder and pump water between the two and can often be attached to existing cylinders. On the SWAP Module, you will learn about different sub-types of Integrated and Split systems, as well as ground source Heat Pump Water Heating systems.

Consumer Demand

Today’s consumers are looking for ways to future-proof their homes against rising energy costs and make their homes more energy efficient. Hot water accounts for 40% of annual household energy bills, so it’s one of the first places consumers will start looking to save. When you register for SWAP, we’ll equip you with useful information to help you advise your customers to choose the right water heating option for their needs. Here are some reasons to choose HPWH:

  • Every 1kW of energy used to operate a HPWH transfers 3 kW of heat into the water.
  • 300% efficient
  • Delivers the highest energy efficiency and is the cheapest water heating option available today
  • Offers the combination of reliable hot water, energy bill savings, and decreased environmental impact
  • Fully warranted by manufacturers and offer reliability and low maintenance
  • Proven technology that works, which means less hassle for you, and high satisfaction for your customers

Easy installation —no roof work

Heat Pump Water Heaters can be installed quickly and easily by any qualified plumber. For a plumber, the installation of a HPWH is similar to the installation of a standard electric storage water heater. On the SWAP Module, you will learn more about installation guidelines, but here are a few things to consider:

  • Ensure air can freely flow through the module, and that there is sufficient clearance around the air inlets and outlets
  • The compressor generates some noise when running and should be positioned away from bedrooms.
  • Do not install the unit close to corners with two hard walls that could reflect and amplify the sound

Made for the land of the long white cloud

HPWH technology is ideally suited to the New Zealand climate, as well as our energy landscape. Here are some reasons why:

  • Heat Pump Water Heating uses 100% renewable air as its primary energy source, and uses largely renewable electricity to run the HPWH compressor. In New Zealand, up to 70% of our electricity is from wind, hydro and geothermal combined. This is very different from other countries like Australia, where coal is heavily relied upon. And, in New Zealand, the goal is to reach 90% renewable sources by 2025.
  • Because Heat Pump Water Heaters extract their energy from the surrounding air rather than from sunlight, they are able to produce hot water any time of day or night, as well as on cloudy or overcast days. This means abundant, reliable hot water, rain or shine, even in the land of the long white cloud.
